For Sirius, can you place the home antenna outside without having it plugged into the dock?

I have the home kit, and I just keep it in my room so I can listen to the Stiletto. But I don't always get a good signal. Will the antenna work outside even if not plugged into the dock? I was looking at the instructions on the website and it just shows the antenna leading outside but don't know if it's attached to anything.
